Overview:
Khaas Food already had a working web platform when the mobile project began. But the web could not do one critical thing — stay connected with customers after they placed an order. In Bangladesh, where over 90% of internet users browse on their phones, a website alone meant waiting for customers to come back. There was no way to reach them, remind them, or reward them. Khaas Food brought Wafi Solutions in to build a native mobile app for Android and iOS that would give the brand a permanent presence on customers’ devices. Launched on December 2, 2021, the app introduced push notifications, automatic OTP login, and a referral program — turning a passive web experience into an active customer relationship.
Business Challenges:
- No Post-Order Customer Communication: After placing an order, customers received no updates and had to revisit the website themselves to check delivery status — generating a growing volume of support calls.
- Mobile Browser Login Friction Killing Conversions: Copying and pasting OTPs from SMS into a mobile browser created enough friction to push a significant number of users away before completing login.
- No Permanent Brand Presence on Customer Devices: The web platform had no way to reach customers between orders — no notifications, no reminders, no reason to return without visiting the site directly.
- Customer Acquisition Depended Entirely on Paid Campaigns: Khaas Food had no organic referral mechanism — so every new customer required paid marketing spend with no way to activate the existing customer base.
- Web Platform Could Not Serve Mobile-First Audience: With over 90% of internet users on phones, a browser-only experience meant Khaas Food was missing its primary audience’s natural buying behavior.
Technical Challenges:
-
- Android Keystore and Play Store Release Dependency: Every Android release required keystore signing, ProGuard optimization, and Play Store review approval — a single build error meant a broken app reaching users, with no hotfix possible until Google approved the next version.
- SMS Retriever Hash Tied Directly to the Keystore: The OTP authentication flow generates a unique hash from the app’s keystore signature, and the backend embeds this hash in every OTP SMS. Losing or replacing the keystore would permanently break login for every user on the platform.
- Running Capacitor and Cordova Bridges Simultaneously: Some required native features had no Capacitor plugin support at the time, forcing both frameworks to run together in one codebase. Managing version compatibility between two bridges without breaking either added sustained engineering overhead throughout development.
Solution Provided:
-
- FCM Push Notifications for Every Order Milestone: Wafi Solutions integrated Firebase Cloud Messaging to send customers automatic updates at every key order stage — confirmation, out for delivery, and delivered — eliminating the need to revisit the website to check order status.
- Automatic OTP Detection via SMS Retriever: Instead of asking users to copy and paste OTPs manually, the app detects the incoming SMS and fills the code automatically — removing the single biggest drop-off point in the mobile login flow.
- Referral Program With Scratch Card Reward Experience: A standard reward notification would have been ignored. Wafi built a scratch card interaction to reveal referral rewards. A deliberate UX decision that made claiming rewards engaging enough to drive sustained participation.
- 10 Switchable Home Screen Layouts: The home screen supported 10 layout variants that the Khaas Food team could switch for different seasons, campaigns, or product categories without touching the codebase — giving marketing full control without engineering involvement.
- 6 Category Page Layouts for Campaign Flexibility: Six distinct category page layouts gave Khaas Food’s team the ability to restructure product merchandising and run targeted promotional campaigns without requiring a new development cycle.
Impact:
-
- 23,000 Active Users Acquired Without a Single Paid Campaign: Every user on the platform came through organic adoption and referrals — proving the app itself became Khaas Food’s most cost-effective acquisition channel since launch.
- Post-Order Support Calls Dropped Significantly: FCM push notifications kept customers informed at every order milestone — confirmation, out for delivery, and delivered — directly cutting the volume of “where is my order” calls to the support team.
- Login Abandonment Eliminated at the OTP Stage: SMS Retriever removed the manual copy-paste step entirely, closing the drop-off point that was pushing mobile browser users away before they completed login.
- Referral Program Turned Existing Users Into an Acquisition Channel: The scratch card reward experience drove sustained participation in the referral program — the existing base of 23,000+ users began bringing in new customers organically for the first time.
- Marketing Gained Full Campaign Control Without Engineering Dependency: 10 switchable home screen layouts and 6 category page layouts let the Khaas Food team run seasonal campaigns and restructure merchandising without a single development cycle.
- 58-Screen App Delivered Across Android and iOS From One Codebase: Ionic and Capacitor enabled full Android and iOS delivery from a single codebase — covering ordering, tracking, rewards, and referrals without maintaining two separate development tracks.
